The Spirit of Giving Abounds

December 30, 2010

With heart and hands, pillowscases have poured intoThe Quilt Crossing throughout the year. With the lastest donations we have been able to give over a 1000 pillowcases to the local ConKerr cancer organization. These went to children in local hospitals facing life threatening illnesses.

Our latest donations were from Mary Aruskevicius and Sydney Renspurger (picture above) who together made 101 pillowcases as a Community Service project. An additional donation of pillowcases came from LDS Tuscany Ward Refief Society members.

Keep those pillowcases coming. We have a great selection of free patterns located in the lefthand column of this blog. You can find them under the page titled Pillowcase Madness.

BSU Pillow Blanket

Claire Baker’s BSU Pillow Blanket

In October we received an email from Claire in Everett Washington asking about BSU Fleece. She want to make a Pocket Pillow Quilt for someone special. We had a shipment of fleece expected daily. Claire waited patiently until our supply arrived and we mailed her order off to her.
She shares the following with us: ” By the time I had a day to sew, it all came together BEAUTIFULLY! Because I used every square inch I possibly could, the final size was 57″ x 84″! Altogether, I’d say it was 3.5 - 4 hours of work, but I’m sure I could trim that down to 3 or less on the next one. Yes, I’m planning a U of Oregon blanket for my son as soon as his acceptance comes!”

Hoffman Fabrics designs the best batik fabrics in the world, in our not-so-humble opinion. They are produced on the island of Bali, using traditional hand techniques, by master craftspeople. Hoffman groups these fabrics into yummy collections and cuts 2-1/2″ strips. There are forty “flavors” in each group. We love them for several reasons: a) because they are beautiful b) because their high thread count makes them so easy to work with and c) because, unlike jelly rolls, the fabrics always work well together to make a cohesive quilt. For the next twenty-four hours, the five flavors shown above are $27.95 each - a $7.00 savings. If you bought all five, you’d save $35 dollars - WOW!

And remind Santa, et al, to pick up your goodies before we close at 4pm on December 24th - he won’t want to be on your naughty list!

Mary Ellen’s Best Press makes ironing fun!  Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it does make it easier and better smelling!  The scent is light, never cloying, and Best Press never clogs, flakes, or leaves residue on fabric; it adds a nice crispness that makes it easier to sew (and helps me increase my accuracy); it helps resist wrinkles, and is acid free. Plus kind of addictive.  Our little polka dot bag of six 2-ounce bottles - one each of Lavender Fields, Cherry Blossom, Citrus Grove, Tea Rose Garden, Caribbean Beach, and Scent Free - is regularly $23.99.  Today it’s only $19.99.  Get one for yourself and one for your best quilting bud.

Make no mistake, these are some of the best notions you’ll ever use. How many times have you attempted to square up an applique block and accidentally trimmed it so the design was no longer centered?  Ditto with embroidered blocks or focus fabric you wanted to fussy cut.  Oopsy!  This ruler will save your sanity.  Lines are marked at inch increments and holes are drilled at the half-inch.  This lets you center the design within the lines and put pencil marks at the cutting lines.  Then, you just scoot the ruler over, line the edges up with the marked dots, and rotary cut your block perfectly.

Now, speaking of perfect, what’s the perfect marking pencil?  Why it’s the Sewline Fabric Pencil.  Anyone who tries it becomes an instant convert.  If you’re an experienced quilter, this is the one you’ve been looking for all your quilting life.  If you are a new sewer, don’t reinvent the wheel - start with the right one.  Today’s special?  Purchase the 8-1/2″ ruler package for $36.45. It includes the ruler, fabric pencil and a package of refill lead.

Next to sewing, what’s our favorite pastime?  Eating?  Okay, that too.  But cooking is the right answer.  Because we enjoy it so, the Sew-n-Sews got together and made a cookbook of our favorite recipes - they are truly yummy!  It’s the book we reach for when we’re looking for a crowd pleaser.  Today’s special is a copy of the cookbook ($17.95 with $2.00 of that donated to the Idaho Food Bank), a “Grandma Dot’s Fruit Pie Hot Pad” pattern (designed by the famous authoress, Joyce Cambron), and a kit to make a red berry pie hot pad ($5.99).  If you buy today, the pattern is yours for free - a savings of $4.99!
